Entry 02: Finishes That Feel Considered

Beautiful, considered finishes that elevate everyday spaces.
There’s a quiet shift happening in how people are approaching their homes this year.
Less about statement for the sake of it. Less about trends that come and go quickly. And more about spaces that feel calm, layered, and thoughtfully finished.
It’s something I’ve been noticing more and more across projects in Shrewsbury and the wider Shropshire area people wanting homes that feel good to live in, not just good to look at.
This Month’s Reflection
The idea I keep coming back to is this: it’s not just what colour you choose it’s how that colour is used.
Flat, single-tone walls are slowly being replaced with something softer. More layered. Subtle shifts in tone that add depth without drawing too much attention to themselves. It’s a quieter way of designing, but a much more lasting one.
And it’s not just colour. Finishes are changing too.
There’s a move away from anything too glossy or sharp, and towards softer mattes and gentle sheens and surfaces that catch the light rather than reflect it harshly. The kind of finish that makes a room feel calm without you quite knowing why.
What I’m Seeing More Of
A few things have been coming up consistently in recent work:
Layered colour palettes
Using tones that sit close together to create warmth and depth, rather than contrast for the sake of it.
Softer finishes
Mattes and velvet sheens that feel understated and easy to live with.
Subtle texture
Light plaster effects and textured paints that add character without overwhelming the space.
Colour wrapped details
Extending colour onto woodwork: skirting, doors, window frames this is so everything feels more connected.
Feature areas that feel built in
Colour used across ceilings, alcoves, or architectural details, rather than just a single wall.
None of it is overly dramatic. But together, it creates spaces that feel more complete.
A Note on Craft
One thing that hasn’t changed and never really will is the importance of preparation.
Clean lines. Smooth surfaces. Even finishes.
These are the details that sit in the background, but they’re what makes everything else work. When the preparation is right, the design feels intentional. When it’s rushed, you notice it. Even if you can’t quite say why.
Where It’s Heading
Another shift I’ve noticed is how homes and workspaces are starting to overlap more.
People are creating spaces that need to work harder somewhere to live, relax, and sometimes work too. And that’s influencing how we decorate.
More durable finishes in high-traffic areas. Calmer tones where focus is needed. Subtle zoning through colour rather than physical separation.
It’s a more practical way of thinking, but also a more personal one.
What It Means for Your Space
None of these ideas are about following trends too closely.
They’re about creating spaces that feel settled. Thoughtful. Easy to live in.
Colours that work with your light
Finishes that feel calm rather than overpowering
Details that quietly elevate the whole room
That’s what tends to last.
Until Next Entry
If you’ve been thinking about refreshing your space whether that’s through colour, finish, or something more complete this is a good place to start.
And if you want to talk it through, I’m always happy to help you find what feels right for your home.
